Superwoman of Style: Karlie Kloss

Karlie Kloss is a superwoman. Though she’s mainly known for killing it on the runway, gracing Vogue covers (she’s been on thirty four of them), and having chic dinner dates with T-Swift, there’s so much more to this girl than her fitness regime and impeccable fashion sense.

Just a few years ago, Karlie began Karlie’s Kookies, healthy alternative treats (gluten-free, vegan, dairy free) whose proceeds go to providing meals for the hungry. Karlie’s most recent project, Kode for Klossy, challenges women to pursue more careers in tech. In collaboration with the Flatiron School, Kloss has created scholarships and camps, providing opportunities for young girls to learn in fields that women are often discouraged from or intimidated by. “Understanding coding is a weapon,” Kloss told Code.org, “It’s like a superpower.  It’s better than a superpower…It’s important to break that stigma of ‘it’s not cool to be smart.’  If you can understand, much less speak code, you can build anything.”

Life Lessons from Karlie:

  1.  It’s never too late to try something new. At age 23, Karlie decided she wanted to learn to code. Though she’d no previous training, she began to teach herself and is now pursuing a degree at NYU.
  2.  Don’t let the world put you in one box. Karlie’s a baker, entrepreneur, supermodel, philanthropist, vlogger, cover star, coder, and fashion icon. You don’t have to limit yourself to one interest! Go against the grain and pursue what you love, now matter how diverse your passions are.
  3.  You have the potential to make a difference. Though many may have underestimated her as simply a face on a magazine, Karlie saw that as an opportunity to do something great. Don’t let the limitations others put on you, stop you from going out and making an impact.

THAWING TEMPERATURES

It’s that time of year when it’s still cold, but just warm enough that a full-on winter coat is a bother. Take your tips from Karlie and layer your sweaters instead.  A turtleneck keeps your neck warm, while an oversized, asymmetrical sweater adds flair to your ensemble. Add shiny shades to block out the glaring sun.

FACING THE CUSE ‘SPRING’

Syracuse’s spring weather has been known to change dramatically even within the course of a few hours. Balance your outfit by pairing a warmer sweater and boots with shorts.

LAZY-GIRL CHIC

When you’re late for class, it can be difficult to come up with a cute outfit on the fly. A comfy dress looks stylish, while greatly simplifying your morning routine.
